Educational Services

Institute for Education and Leadership

The Institute for Education and Leadership is a nationally recognized resource for public and professional education in all facets of hospice and palliative care.  A formally constituted branch of Capital Hospice, the Institute:

• educates diverse constituencies via educational programs for professional caregivers, research and community outreach.
• evaluates practices in hospice and palliative care to promote best practices amount all hospice and palliative caregivers.
• provides guidance on ethical and spiritual questions arising in the care of a dying person.
• provides public policy guidance for regulators and legislators whose decision is impact health care delivery and end-of-life care.

Educational Programs

Through its educational programs, the Institute:

• offers Palliative Medicine Review Committee (PMRC)-accredited, advanced medical fellowships for physicians pursuing specialization and board certification in hospice and palliative care. For information about the Capital Hospice Palliative Medicine Fellowship, click here.
• educates more physicians and health professionals in hospice and palliative care than any other hospice in the Mid-Atlantic region, via

Research Projects

The Institute's research focuses on development of progress and integrity of hospice and palliative care, by

• developing models of pain and symptom management to further the understanding of best practices, including medication protocols
• identifying and testing barriers to effective palliative care, to provide industry guidance to overcome such barriers
• studying ways to incorporate state-of-the-art information technology in patient care

 

Community Outreach

The Institute, in collaboration with Capital Hospice's Speakers Bureau, develops special programs for informing and involving local communities in end-of-life care.  Their public outreach programs and seminars take into consideration the cultural differences, language barriers, and lack of access to health insurance experienced by many in the community.  Programs cover many topics, such as:

• Working with your doctor and health care team
• Communicating with people with chronic or terminal illness
• Planning your will and advance directives (advance care planning)
• Giving care to your loved one
• Adjusting to the death of a loved one

Support for the Institute for Education and Leadership

Capital Hospice is on a mission to transform end-of-life care.  Our commitment to education and advocacy is a necessary step to ensuring that all people have the same high quality, compassionate end-of-life care.

The Institute for Education and Leadership invests in professionals -- the clinicians, caregivers, and many others who provide compassionate care to patients with serious advanced illness, and their families.  We research effective pain management protocol, offer guidance in ethics issues, and provide analysis and policy guidance to regulators and lawmakers.

Only through community support -- private contributions from individuals, foundations and businesses -- can this be possible.  Earned income from conference registrations, workshop fees and tuition help to cover only part of the Institute's work; consequently, the balance must come from the community.
