How is Palliative Care different from Hospice Care?
Palliative and Hospice care are different in two important ways:
- Any patient with chronic illness, regardless of prognosis, is eligible for Palliative Care
- Medicare guidelines for Palliative Care services are flexible; with Palliative Care, patients can receive both aggressive treatment for their chronic disease AND aggressive palliative care to treat their symptoms -- simultaneously
Palliative Care is not a substitute for Hospice Care; it can, however, significantly enhance the lives of patients who are seriously ill and do not qualify or do not choose Hospice Care.
