Patient Care Fund

2007 Patient Care Fund Drive

Capital Hospice provides nearly $1 million in charity care to patients and families in our community who otherwise would not be able to afford our services.   Thanks to community support in 2006, Capital Hospice cared for 114 patients and their families without insurance.

The patients and families who benefit from the Patient care Fund come from all walks of life and are facing every circumstance that you can imagine.

No matter what the situation, Capital Hospice believes that all those who come to us for help deserve a dignified, comfortable death, and that their families deserve to feel heard and supported.   We will continue to provide care to all those who come to us in need . . . with your help.

How you help us . . . help others:

George
When George first found out that he had AIDS, he felt like one of the lucky ones.  He had a steady job and good health insurance.  But, over the course of his treatments, his medical expenses rose and ultimately, his insurance couldn't cover them. When George became too sick to work, things went from bad to worse.  He lost his income, the cushion of health care coverage, and ended up homeless . . . or bouncing between family members' homes.

George's sister describes him as "the kind of guy you can always count on, when you need a helping hand, an extra bed, or a few dollars for a friend."  And it was especially hard for George, when things were so tough for him, to look to others for help.  His health had deteriorated so much and he knew his final days were approaching.

That's when his family turned to Capital Hospice for help.  In Capital Hospice's care, George had a whole team of caregivers attending to his needs.  His nurse made regular visits, minimizing pain and keeping him alert.  Our hospice social worker helped his sister and other family members begin to cope with their grief -- and offer resources for other kinds of help.  And visits from our hospice chaplain buoyed George's spirits and allowed him, and his family, to make the most of his remaining days.

All this and more Capital Hospice could give to George and his family because of the community generous support of Capital Hospice's Patient Care Fund.

George had one last wish, which his sister shared with us, after George passed.  He arranged for Capital Hospice to receive the death benefit from his modest life insurance policy.  "There will be a time when I am gone, but there will always be others who need help," George told his sister. "I want Capital Hospice to be there for them as it was for me."

There are many patients like George who will come to Capital Hospice in need this year.  Your gift to the 2007 Patient Care Fund today will allow us to care for patients like George and his family when they need us most.  Please give generously.  Thank you.
