Capital Hospice provides expert end-of-life care to patients and families in need in Northern Virginia (including Loudoun and Prince William counties), Washington DC, and Prince George's County, Maryland. We were one of the first non-profit providers of hospice care in the United States and today, we are the largest in the National Capital Region and among the largest in the country. Since 1977, we have served more than 55,000 patients and families in the metropolitan Washington area.
Today, we serve approximately 900 terminally ill people and their families every day. We care for patients living with any life-limiting illness, including heart disease, cancer, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), AIDS, emphysema, and Alzheimer's dementia, for example. No matter how sick or how old (or young), from newborns to centenarians, we're ready to help.
Thanks to community support, Capital Hospice provides about $1 million in charity care each year. We do not turn away anyone medically eligible for our services because they cannot afford their care.
Your contribution allows us to care for others in need in many different ways:
The need for hospice is growing dramatically. According to a study released in the January 7, 2004 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, home-based hospice care received high levels of satisfaction from patients and families. And a National Institutes of Health study showed that more Americans now die at home or in hospice care than in hospitals.
At the same time, however, many patients and families who might benefit from Capital Hospice's programs do not know about the Medicare Hospice benefit or that they are eligible for hospice or palliative care. We are deeply grateful to our community of supporters for your help in reaching out to those in need and allowing us to care for them when they do come our way.
