Volunteer Positions

Patient Care

Patient Care volunteers perform a range of tasks centered around providing comfort and support to patients and their loved ones. They complete 18 hours of training specific to this role before going into the field.

Usually these tasks revolve around caring for and visiting with the patient. But a Patient Care volunteer can also provide an invaluable service by driving a caregiver to the grocery store or pharmacy. Patient Care volunteers also provide a break for the caregiver by visiting with the patient, or a break for the family by visiting with the caregiver.

No matter how they help, it’s impossible to overstate how much this kind of support means-both to the patient and family, and to the team of Hospice professionals working with them.

In addition to visiting patients and families in homes and in long-term care facilities, some Patient Care volunteers work at Capital Hospice’s Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center in Arlington, Virginia. Patients whose symptoms cannot be managed at home are brought here for short-term care. Supervised by RNs, these Inpatient Care volunteers do a great deal of hands-on work, supporting the Hospice team in providing round-the-clock care.

Patient Care volunteers must take a TB skin test, provided at no cost.
