Volunteer Positions

Fundraising

You can support the all-important work of our fundraising department in two ways:

Major Fundraising Events. Two of our major fundraisers, which take place each autumn, depend largely on the enthusiastic support of our volunteers.

• The Hospice Cup is a sailing regatta held in the Chesapeake Bay each September. Proceeds from the annual race support area hospice programs. Volunteers help by planning, staffing, and publicizing the event.
• The Gala is a formal dinner with dancing and live entertainment, held in early October. Volunteers help to organize all facets of the event and then work alongside Hospice staff throughout the evening.

Capital Hospice Thrift Shop. Located in Seven Corners just off Route 7 in Falls Church, Virginia, the Thrift Shop features boutique-level quality goods at thrift store prices.

For example, a local English professor recently purchased a hardback copy of Tennessee Williams’ autobiography-signed by the playwright himself. Antiques and collectible porcelain often come through the door; name-brand clothing and sterling silverware are almost always on display.

The operation is staffed completely by volunteers. Working under the direction of a Hospice staff person, they participate in every aspect of the operation: acquiring, sorting, and pricing donated merchandise; providing customer service; running the register, and displaying items on the sales floor.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of this operation,” says Thrift Shop Manager Michael Murphy. “We run a very efficient store while also having a lot of fun.”

Thrift Shop Details:

Merchandise is screened for high quality.

Volunteers are required to work at least one shift (ranging between 3-4 hours) per month.

Donations are accepted daily. Call in advance if you will need help with your donations. .

Directions from Fairfax County: On Route 50 East, continue under the Route 7 underpass, then make a left onto Patrick Henry Drive (there is a traffic light at this major intersection), followed by another left into the shopping center parking lot. The shop sits four doors from the CVS.

Directions from DC: Take Route 50 West, then make a right onto Patrick Henry Drive (there is a traffic light at this major intersection), followed by a left into the shopping center parking lot. The shop sits four doors from the CVS.

Directions from Prince George’s County: Take the beltway to Route 50 East, then make a left onto Patrick Henry Drive (there is a traffic light at this major intersection), followed by a left into the shopping center parking lot. The shop sits four doors from the CVS.
